In these incredibly difficult times – it is even more important that marginalized communities are supported and included in building a healthier and more equitable Oakland. We can solve the challenges facing us by expanding democracy to make sure the voices and solutions of the next generation are heard!
Oakland Youth Vote (OYV) is a youth-led measure that would give 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote in the School Board elections. We strongly encourage the Council to move the resolution forward – so we can secure the placement of Oakland Youth Vote on the November 2020 ballot.
This campaign was started a year ago by youth leaders (from Oakland Kids First, All City Council Student Union and other OYV Coalition members), who spent months researching, engaging their school communities, and meeting with Councilmembers to enlist their support and develop the legislation. Thank you to Council President Kaplan for authoring the measure, and to Councilmembers Bas and Taylor for co-sponsoring it!
Paid for by the Yes on QQ Campaign, sponsored by a coalition of youth, education, labor, and social justice organizations representing students, families, teachers, and community members.
